Pool Fence and Safety Certificate in Cairns

QBCC says a pool “capable of being filled with water to a depth of 300mm or more” falls under the pool safety standard, and that every regulated pool must be registered. In Cairns the council says it no longer has Licensed Pool Safety Inspectors, so a pool safety certificate comes from an inspector you contact yourself.

What pool fence and safety certificate in Cairns actually involves

While the work is done, the fence has to stay compliant. QBCC says “A building approval is not required for some pool barrier fence repairs and maintenance, but they must still comply with the pool safety standard:” and lists “repairing or adjusting a maximum of 2.4m of the fence or 2 posts” and “repairing, replacing or adjusting a gate to ensure it self-closes and self-latches each and every time”. It also says “If you are removing sections of your fence while undertaking repair or replacement you must ensure a temporary fence is installed during the replacement.”

On sale or lease

QBCC says a pool safety certificate is needed “if you are selling or leasing your property” with a pool. A certificate lasts “2 years for non-shared pools.” and “1 year for shared pools”. A renovation does not start that requirement on its own; a sale or lease does.

Who inspects a pool in Cairns

QBCC says “Only a pool safety inspector —licensed by the QBCC—can issue pool safety certificates.” Cairns Regional Council says “Council no longer has Licensed Pool Safety Inspectors.” and “Pool owners seeking a pool safety certificate need to contact a Licensed Pool Safety Inspector to arrange an inspection.” QBCC adds that “There is no set charge for a pool safety inspector to conduct a full inspection.”, so the inspector's own fee is for you to ask. Every regulated pool must also be on the QBCC pool register, or the owner may face a fine.

Ask the provider whether the quote includes the fence, who arranges the inspector and who lodges the register update. The rain record article covers a different part of the job, the water.

Pool Fence and Safety Certificate in Cairns — common questions

Do I need a certificate just because I am resurfacing?

Not on its own. QBCC says a certificate is needed if you are selling or leasing a property with a pool. If the work touches the fence, an inspector can say whether it still meets the standard.

Does Cairns Regional Council inspect the pool?

No. The council says it no longer has Licensed Pool Safety Inspectors and that owners seeking a certificate need to contact one to arrange an inspection.

Is my pool on the QBCC register?

QBCC says it conducts audits of properties and an unregistered pool may face a fine. Every regulated pool in the state must be registered.
